In June 2013, Mr Kaye hired On Site Generation Ltd to install a 4kWt Yingli YL250C-30b solar PV system at a cost of £7,700. Instead of fitting the panels to the roof of the property, Mr Kaye opted for a ground mounted stand, constructed from sustainably sourced local timber. The benefits of ground mounted arrays are that they allow the orientation and pitch of the PV system to be optimised to enhance solar gain, whilst also avoiding any impact upon the aesthetic appearance of the building. In this case - with the stand’s minimal use of metal and concrete - the ground mounted stand also represents a low carbon option.
With the solar PV system generating renewable electricity for his home, Mr Kaye opted for an air source heat pump to economically supply the property with hot water and under-floor heating. A couple of months later in the construction process, On Site Generation returned to install a 14kW Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump system at a cost of £10,150.
Mr Kaye has reported that his renewable systems are working well, and that he would recommend both systems to others.
His property has now achieved a B rating on its Energy Performance Certificate.
