Renewables pioneer, Mr Helme, was keen to do all that he could to make his property more energy efficient. In 1998 he invested in a solar water heating system to provide some of the hot water for his property, but he didn’t want to stop there.

In the grounds of his detached home situated in the Larkhall area, a ground source heat pump was installed by Ice Energy Scotland in 2009. Alongside this heat generating system, the installation of a wind turbine and solar PV system allows the household to benefit from additional income from Feed-in Tariff for their electricity generating technology.

In 2007, homeowner Mr Helme invested in a 6 kW Proven wind turbine followed a couple of years later, in 2011, by a 4 kWp solar PV system, which together generates the majority of the property’s electricity requirements.

The main motivation for investing in green technology was the desire to become more self-sufficient: “we wanted to depend less on energy production which harmed our environment. We were also encouraged by the amount of money that we could save on our yearly energy bills” explains Mr Helme.

The householder would recommend all the technologies to other property owners: “it has allowed us to save a considerable amount of money on our bills”, but was especially pleased with the performance and cost savings of the solar water heating system: “it is the best paying system of the lot”.

They also made sure their home was energy efficient, prior to installing, by ensuring that the level of insulation in their loft, underfloor and cavity walls was sufficient. This has meant they can get the maximum benefit from their renewables systems.
